Are you an abstract photographer who sees hidden stories in light and shadow? An experimental writer who transforms everyday fragments into reflective narratives? Or a graphic designer who reimagines images and text into compelling layouts?
If so, we invite you to share your vision with us!
If you are new to our medium, Hintology started as an online platform that promoted (and still does) the work of abstract photographers through interviews and curated content on Instagram. Two years ago, we brought to life what we had envisioned from the very beginning of this project: physical publications that broke the conventions of art books through free-flowing designs, tangible pieces we could hold and feel proud of and that represented more than the sum of our individual talents.
On Issue #1, we went free-for-all and built themes surrounding the letter H. On Issue #2, we asked you to pick your own word starting with the letter I as a thematic. Following this ongoing “tradition” of slightly changing the formula from year to year while abiding by the safe stronghold of letters, Issue #3 will be based on a set of pre-selected themes that relate directly or indirectly to the letter N:
Intersection, Force, Union, Countability, Archway, Duality, Emergence, Transition, Overpass, and Sharpness.
n addition to this, we are now inviting graphic designers interested in being challenged in creating original pages for this book using provided images and texts to submit their application. Our aim with this new approach is to provide more diverse modes of expression for this issue; it is an experiment that we are eager to see unfold. To apply as a designer, we only ask that you provide previous one or multiple designs you’ve worked on.
For photographers, we’ve also added the possibility to submit a picture specifically to be considered for the cover artwork.
Last but not least, this edition is free to participate. We’d like to invite more voices to join this project, so feel free to share with all your fellow artists. Each participant may apply with 10 files only once per category: photography, texts or graphic design. If you submit twice for the same category, we will only consider the latest submission. To submit pictures with related accompanying texts (photo-poetry, visual essays, etc.), select: apply as abstract photographer. You may choose as many themes as you want, but make sure to specify in the filenames which artwork pertains to which theme.
